Philosophy of Volunteer Involvement

Built on volunteerism, the ALS Society of Ontario recognizes and affirms the involvement of volunteers at all levels of the organization as a vital component to achieving its mission: to help persons living with ALS access the best possible support, care and treatment and engage in advocacy, raising awareness and education. The ALS Society of Ontario encourages the participation of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, age, religious beliefs, location or health in contributing to and building their community and the ALS Society of Ontario through the act of volunteering. ALS Ontario is committed to supporting and nurturing volunteerism by providing guidance, resources and recognition to all volunteers in a mutually beneficial relationship.

For more information about volunteering with us, please contact our organization at

The ALS Society of Ontario depends on its volunteers whose contributions, dedication and amazing work are vital to the Society and make our mission possible. Each year, volunteers across the province provide invaluable support to people with ALS and their families and raise funds through special events within their community to support programs and services.

There are many opportunities to volunteer with the ALS Society of Ontario. Volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis within the provincial office and out in the communities to provide support to people with ALS and their families and to create awareness, to educate and to advocate within those communities. Volunteers are also needed to help with planning fundraising events or helping out with event day activities.

Volunteering Advantages

In addition to helping the ALS Society of Ontario and its clients, there are many personal advantages to volunteering. The list of reasons to volunteer below was developed by Volunteer Canada:

Volunteers give freely of their time and expertise in order to make a difference. Volunteering can help you:

  • make important networking contacts
  • learn or develop skills
  • gain work experience
  • build self-esteem and self-confidence
  • improve health
  • help you meet new people
  • feel needed and valued
  • make a difference in someone’s life
  • express gratitude for help you may have received in the past from an organization

Whether it is important to you to solve a community problem, advance a worthy cause or to develop as a person, volunteering offers many benefits in appreciation for the gift of your time and expertise.

Volunteer Within Your Community

The three pillars to community volunteering are: (1) Support Services, (2) Awareness, Education and Advocacy, and (3) Fund Development. At the ALS Society of Ontario, there are volunteer opportunities across the province in each of these categories. For more information about volunteering for these positions, please contact the Society at 1-866-611-8545.

There are also opportunities to support these leadership positions within your community. For example, volunteers are needed to assist caregiver group facilitators and to become members of a WALK for ALS committee. To volunteer for a community team, contact your local community group or regional office. If there is no office in your area please contact the provincial office at 1-866-611-8545.
