The most commonly planned gift, a charitable bequest, is a gift that is made through your will.
Planned today, a bequest can ensure that our mission to facilitate access to the best possible support, care and treatment for those with ALS is maintained well into the future.
You can choose to leave the ALS Society of Ontario a specific piece of property, a predetermined sum of money or a percentage of your estate. Through your will, you may even provide a permanent endowment in your name or a loved one's name.
Advantages to giving through a charitable bequest:
- Other than the cost of preparing the will, it doesn't cost you anything to make a generous gift.
- A bequest allows you to make a long-term commitment without affecting your current standard of living.
- A bequest provides the comfort of knowing your assets are still available to you today if needed.
- In many cases, it can allow you to make a larger gift to the ALS Society of Ontario than one made during your lifetime.
- A bequest allows you to make a tax-effective gift. Your estate may claim charitable donations to the ALS Society of Ontario in the year of death equal to 100% of your net income (higher than the limit of 75% for living donors). Any unused charitable donations can be carried back to the previous tax year at the same higher rate.
- A bequest ensures your gift will be used to support ongoing programs and services to the ALS community.
Sample Bequest Clauses
The following clauses are commonly used in wills for making a gift to the ALS Society of Ontario. Your lawyer can use them to arrange a bequest in your will to the ALS Society of Ontario.
Percentage Gift
Should you wish to leave a portion or share (for example 20%) of your estate to support people with ALS, your lawyer can use the following wording:
"I direct my trustees to deliver, pay or transfer ___________ % (or share) of the residue of my estate to the ALS Society of Ontario to be used for its general purposes."
Remainder or Residue Gift
You may wish to leave the remainder or residue of your estate, after paying debts and other bequests, to support people with ALS. If so, the following wording is appropriate:
"I direct my trustee to deliver, pay or transfer the residue of my estate to the ALS Society of Ontario for its general purposes."
Specific Gift
When your bequest is to be a specific amount of money or specific asset to support people with ALS, use one of the following clauses:
"I direct my trustees to deliver, pay or transfer the sum of $__________ to the ALS Society of Ontario for its general purposes."
OR
"I direct my trustees to deliver, pay or transfer ____________ [identify the personal to be given, for example, 500 shares of XYZ stock...] to the ALS Society of Ontario for its general purposes."
Endowment Funds
An endowment is a contribution where the original capital donation is preserved in perpetuity. Only the income generated (interest) from the endowment fund is used for the purposes outlined in an endowment agreement. To establish a general endowment fund use the following clause:
"I direct my trustees to deliver, pay or transfer the sum of $__________ (or ______ percentage share of my estate) to the ALS Society of Ontario to be held in trust and kept invested, and the income from such sum shall be used for its general purposes."
Designated or Restricted Gifts
If you wish to leave a bequest to ensure the continuation of a specific area of work such as our equipment program, support services or community programs, you may use your bequest to establish an endowment fund or direct your bequest to one of the programs of the ALS Society of Ontario:
"I direct my trustees to deliver, pay or transfer the sum of $_________ (or ______ percentage share of my estate) to the ALS Society of Ontario to be used for the following purpose(s) ______________________. In the event that circumstances make the specific use of this gift no longer practical or desirable, the Board of Directors of the ALS Society of Ontario is hereby authorized to make changes in its use consonant with the spirit and general intent of the gift."
Please note: If you wish to designate your bequest to a specific purpose, we ask you to contact the ALS Society of Ontario prior to completing your will, to ensure your gift intentions can be met.
